Tampa Bay
Made To Stand Out
From a garage in Tampa Bay.
Swamp Hatz didn't begin in a corporate office. It started in a Tampa Bay garage filled with music gear, paint supplies, and a creative urge to do something different.
In 2008, longtime bassist and Tampa musician Rafael “Tazz” began making custom cowboy hats while recovering from cancer. Creating them became a way to stay connected to art, music and expression during a difficult chapter of his life.
The hats quickly developed their own personality — bold designs, worn-in character, hand-painted details and shapes finished with care. Each one reflected a personal sense of style rather than looking like something pulled from a factory shelf.
Music gear. Paint supplies. Big ideas.
No corporate blueprint required.
A painting technique with a story.
Tazz's approach to paint was influenced by his father, a WWII veteran who camouflaged tanks during the war.
He showed Tazz how to work with paint, natural textures and even leaves to create patterns that blended into their surroundings while still catching the eye.
That influence eventually helped shape the visual language of Swamp Hatz — from swamp leaf prints and camouflage to snakeskin textures, animal patterns, psychedelic color and one-off painted designs.
The hats started selling themselves.
Tazz began wearing his creations while playing concerts around Tampa. Before long, people weren't simply asking where the hats came from — fans in the crowd were trying to buy the one right off his head while he was still onstage.
That reaction convinced him to make more. New designs followed, word started spreading, and what began as a personal creative outlet slowly became a small business of its own.
The hats took on a life of their own.
No two hats need to feel the same.
Swamp Hatz has never been about one single aesthetic. The common thread is personality.

Custom Personality

A family brand that kept growing.
In 2020, Tazz's son Sebastian joined the business and helped bring Swamp Hatz online.
What had spread mainly through concerts, events and word of mouth could suddenly reach people across the United States and eventually customers internationally.
The family still brings the hats directly to people at music festivals, sporting events and tailgates. Sometimes one person puts on a hat, somebody else notices it, and before long a crowd starts forming around the booth.
At one event, demand became so overwhelming that the team was even asked to pack up early.
